Apple asserts that it cannot access users' raw audio from its newly introduced Audio Intelligence features.
During the Wednesday iPhone Duo launch event, Apple unveiled several new Siri and Audio Intelligence capabilities, such as Siri Recap, Live Rewind, Sound Recognition, and Music Recognition. Concurrently, the company released a document outlining its strategy to reconcile AI "ambient listening" with user privacy standards. According to the document, raw audio generated by these new features is processed within dedicated hardware, remains unsaved as a file, and remains inaccessible to the operating system, installed applications, or Apple itself.
Apple elaborates that Audio Intelligence leverages the Secure Exclave found in the S11 chip powering the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. This Secure Exclave acts as a hardware-isolated compartment within the silicon designed to process sensor data independently of the system's main operations. Data processed and analyzed in this Secure Exclave is inaccessible to watchOS, applications, the user, and Apple. When audio enters the Secure Exclave of the Apple Watch, it is initially processed for speech, sounds, or music without transcribing or storing the raw audio. The resulting buffer functions as a continuously overwritten stream that exists solely within the protected hardware and never constitutes an audio recording.
Furthermore, the tech giant emphasizes that users retain control over "whether and when" the Audio Intelligence features are active. For instance, activating Live Rewind requires users to double-tap the Digital Crown each time they wish to use it. Additionally, if Audio Intelligence data requires transfer to an iPhone, it is encrypted and passed through both devices' Secure Exclaves. Users also determine which text to retain from Siri Recap and Live Rewind, and text from Audio Intelligence will sync via end-to-end encryption provided a device passcode and iCloud two-factor authentication are enabled.
