Apple has acquired Israeli artificial intelligence startup Q.ai as competition intensifies among major tech companies to lead the next stage of AI development. The deal is part of Apple’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in AI-powered hardware and advanced audio technology, where rivals like Meta and Google are also investing heavily.
The acquisition was first reported by Reuters, which said Q.ai specializes in imaging and machine learning systems. Its technology focuses on improving how devices understand speech, including whispered voice detection and clearer audio capture in noisy surroundings. These capabilities could directly support Apple’s growing set of AI-driven features in personal devices.
Apple has recently introduced new AI tools in its AirPods lineup, including live translation features rolled out last year. Q.ai’s technology is expected to help Apple further improve audio performance and voice interaction across its products. The startup has also built systems that read small facial muscle movements, which could enhance performance and responsiveness in Apple’s Vision Pro headset and other wearable devices.
According to the Financial Times, the transaction is valued at close to $2 billion. That would make it Apple’s second-largest acquisition so far, behind its $3 billion purchase of Beats Electronics in 2014. The move shows Apple’s willingness to spend more aggressively to secure advanced AI capabilities tied to hardware and user experience.
This is also not the first time Q.ai CEO Aviad Maizels has sold a company to Apple. In 2013, he sold PrimeSense, a 3D sensing firm whose technology helped Apple move from fingerprint unlocking to facial recognition on iPhones. Q.ai, founded in 2022, is backed by investors including Kleiner Perkins and Gradient Ventures. Its leadership team and staff are expected to join Apple following the acquisition.
The purchase comes just ahead of Apple’s quarterly earnings report, where analysts expect revenue of about $138 billion and the company’s strongest iPhone sales growth in four years. The timing highlights Apple’s push to show momentum in both AI innovation and core product performance.
