Anthropic is making a strategic move to attract smaller enterprises, having announced on Wednesday the introduction of Claude for Small Business. This new suite of services is specifically designed for clients who operate on a scale more akin to a local hardware store or coffee shop, distinguishing them from large corporations like Walmart or Starbucks.

Historically, the most intensive adoption of artificial intelligence has largely been concentrated at the enterprise level. Studies in the recent past have consistently indicated that companies successfully scaling AI systems beyond experimental or pilot phases were predominantly large organizations backed by extensive budgets. However, this landscape appears to be evolving, with a noticeable increase in AI adoption among small and mid-sized businesses.

Anthropic’s latest package of features is meticulously crafted to support these emerging AI users. Accessible through a newly integrated toggle within Claude Cowork, the company’s dedicated task-automation platform for business users, these features empower users to browse the web, manage files, and execute complex multi-step workflows. By activating this toggle, paying subscribers unlock a comprehensive set of automated services, encompassing bookkeeping functionalities, insightful business analytics, and generative tools for crafting effective ad campaigns.

Furthermore, this new suite boasts seamless integrations between Claude Cowork and a variety of essential software products, including QuickBooks, Canva, DocuSign, HubSpot, and PayPal.

The company emphasized the untapped potential, stating, “Small businesses account for 44% of U.S. GDP and employ nearly half the private-sector workforce, but their adoption of AI has lagged behind larger enterprises. Tools and training are rarely tailored to the ways small businesses operate, and as a result their use often stops at the chat window.”

For founders and investors alike, Anthropic’s initiative signals a significant expansion of the AI platform competition into the downmarket segment. It suggests that the next crucial battleground for user acquisition will not be the Fortune 500, but rather the 36 million small businesses that form the fundamental backbone of the U.S. economy.

This launch positions Anthropic slightly behind its competitor, OpenAI, which unveiled Enterprise ChatGPT towards the end of 2023, an offering that also included an integration for smaller teams dubbed ChatGPT Business.

To vigorously promote its new features, Anthropic is planning an extensive coast-to-coast promotional tour, commencing in Chicago and spanning 10 cities in total. At each stop, the company intends to host a complimentary AI training workshop, available to 100 local small business leaders.
