A local software firm in India has initiated legal proceedings against the artificial intelligence giant Anthropic, asserting prior claim to the "Anthropic" name. This dispute highlights the potential for conflict as global AI companies rapidly expand into new international markets, encountering established local entities.
This legal challenge emerges amidst Anthropic's intensified strategic focus on India. The company announced the establishment of an India office last October and recently appointed Irina Ghose, former Microsoft India managing director, to spearhead its operations in the country. These moves underscore the burgeoning significance of the South Asian market for global AI firms looking to extend their reach beyond the United States and Europe.
The Indian company, Anthropic Software, filed its complaint in a commercial court in Karnataka in January, a document reviewed by TechCrunch. It claims continuous use of the name since 2017 and argues that the recent entry of the larger Anthropic has led to confusion among its customers. The firm is seeking legal recognition of its prior usage, relief to prevent ongoing confusion, and damages totaling ₹10 million (approximately $110,000).
Mohammadayyaz A. Mulla, founder and director of Anthropic Software, conveyed to TechCrunch that his company's objective is not confrontation, but rather to achieve clarity and acknowledgment of its earlier use of the name in India. He added that litigation serves as a contingency should an amicable coexistence prove unattainable.
"As of now, I am exercising my legal right as it’s causing huge confusion to my customers," Mulla stated.
India, recognized as the world's most populous nation and one of the fastest-growing internet economies, has become a pivotal arena for leading AI companies, including Anthropic and its competitor OpenAI. The country is also preparing to host an AI Impact Summit in New Delhi next week, where Anthropic co-founder and chief executive Dario Amodei is scheduled to appear alongside other prominent industry figures such as Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, and Sundar Pichai.
A court order dated January 20, also seen by TechCrunch, confirms that the court has issued a notice and suit summons to Anthropic. However, the court opted not to grant an interim injunction and has scheduled the matter for a subsequent hearing on February 16.
Anthropic did not provide a response when asked for comment.
