Anthropic has unveiled Claude Tag, a new feature currently in research preview, designed as an "always-on Claude" AI teammate integrated directly into Slack. This innovative tool empowers users to tag @Claude within chats to solicit insights and assign specific tasks. Initially available through Slack, Claude Tag is being rolled out exclusively for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team customers.
Claude Tag represents a significant evolution of several existing integrations. Users are already familiar with direct messaging @Claude in Slack or tagging it in channels for immediate assistance. Furthermore, Claude Code in Slack facilitates the routing of coding tasks from channel mentions to comprehensive web-based coding sessions, with updates seamlessly posted back into the original thread.
However, Claude Tag distinguishes itself by introducing a layer of persistent context and memory, a capability challenging to maintain with previous tools. Anthropic states, "As Claude follows along with its channel, it learns ever more about the work." The company further notes that "Claude can also automatically gather facts from elsewhere in the organization, if it’s granted permission to read other channels."
A key aspect of Claude Tag is that every member of a given Slack channel shares access to a single Claude identity. This means "anyone can see what Claude has been working on, and can pick up the conversation from where the last person left off." System administrators retain control, specifying which tools, information, and channels Claude can access. Each Claude identity remains strictly scoped to the channels defined by administrators, ensuring, for instance, that a Claude configured for legal tasks cannot inadvertently transfer memories into an engineering channel.
When assigned a task, Claude Tag systematically breaks it down into stages, executing them using its available tools and providing updates within a Slack thread. Beyond explicit task execution, Claude Tag also features an "ambient mode." In this mode, it proactively engages in the chat to keep the team informed, highlight relevant information from across the organization, and follow up on threads or tasks that might have been overlooked.
Anthropic suggests that this functionality fosters an experience akin to "working with a real colleague — one that can produce work in public view, with far greater context and understanding than before."
The emphasis on deep, persistent context is becoming increasingly vital in enterprise AI deployments, and Anthropic is not alone in this focus.
