Anthropic has experienced an unprecedented surge in consumer popularity, driven by a confluence of events including its public dispute with the Department of Defense, humorous Super Bowl advertisements targeting OpenAI, and the growing adoption of its Claude Code offerings.
According to an analysis conducted for TechCrunch by Indagari, a firm specializing in consumer transaction analysis, Claude has seen record-breaking growth in paid subscribers. This assessment is based on billions of anonymized credit card transactions from approximately 28 million U.S. consumers.
It is important to note the inherent caveats in such large-scale data analysis. While the data is substantial, it does not encompass every consumer, meaning Indagari cannot precisely calculate Anthropic's total user base or new user figures. Furthermore, the analysis excludes Claude's significant enterprise business, which forms a core part of its revenue, as well as its free-tier users. Estimates for total Claude consumer users vary widely, from 18 million to 30 million, though Anthropic has not publicly disclosed these figures. However, a company spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that Claude's paid subscriptions have more than doubled this year.
Notably, consumers committed financially to Claude in record numbers between January and February. Indagari also reported to TechCrunch that February saw a record return of previous users to the platform.
The majority of these new subscribers are opting for the lowest-priced "Pro" tier, which costs $20 per month, in contrast to the higher $100 or $200 per month options.
Data extending through early March further confirms the sustained momentum of subscriber growth, though this information is subject to a two-week reporting delay.
Several factors contributed to Claude's heightened consumer awareness since January. Anthropic aired multiple Super Bowl commercials that humorously critiqued ChatGPT's integration of ads, vowing that Claude would remain ad-free. These advertisements were widely perceived as both amusing and effective, even reportedly irritating OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
However, a more significant public spectacle began in late January, when media outlets including the Wall Street Journal and Axios started reporting on an escalating conflict between Anthropic and the Department of Defense. The crux of this disagreement revolved around the permissible uses of Anthropic’s AI by the military.
Anthropic firmly refused to permit the DoD to utilize its AI models for lethal autonomous operations, which involve AI making decisions that could result in fatalities, or for the mass surveillance of American citizens. This dispute became increasingly public, culminating in Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei issuing a resolute public statement on February 26. This came amidst threats from the DoD to impair Anthropic’s business by designating it a supply risk, a designation the department subsequently made. While lawsuits are now underway, a federal judge recently issued a temporary injunction against the DoD's designation.
During this period, new user growth experienced a sharp upward trajectory. The increase was particularly pronounced between the initial late January media reports and Amodei's public statement on February 26.
Beyond these high-profile events, product innovations have also been key drivers of subscriptions. Claude Code and Claude Cowork, developer and productivity tools respectively, were launched in January. More recently, the "Computer Use" feature, released this week, has also generated a significant surge, Anthropic informed TechCrunch. This feature enables Claude to independently navigate a computer interface, performing actions such as clicking, scrolling, and interacting with applications. It integrates with Dispatch, allowing users to assign tasks from their mobile phones. It is important to note that these advanced features are not available to free-tier users.
Despite Anthropic's considerable growth among U.S. consumers willing to pay for AI services, Claude still trails significantly behind ChatGPT in overall market penetration.
While OpenAI experienced an immediate spike in uninstalls following its announcement of a deal with the DoD—a move that sharply contrasted with Anthropic's ethical stance on AI use—Indagari's data indicates that OpenAI continues to acquire new paid subscribers at a rapid pace, maintaining its position as the leading consumer AI platform.
