AI developer Anthropic has announced it will implement watermarking for text generated by its models, including Claude, to ensure compliance with European regulations. This confirmation was published on an updated company support page.

This initiative aligns with the EU AI Act’s Transparency Code, which became effective on August 2. The code stipulates that AI companies must clearly mark AI-generated or edited content in a manner that allows other systems to identify its artificial origin.

Anthropic stated that all models launched subsequent to August 2 will automatically incorporate technology to watermark both computer-generated text and files. For file watermarking, the company is adopting the C2PA open standard.

Furthermore, the company indicated plans to extend this watermarking capability to older models and emphasized that the watermark is designed to persist even when users copy and paste the text into other locations.

The support page elaborates, stating: “Because the watermark is part of the text, it will travel with the text when it’s copied and pasted elsewhere, and may persist through some editing. Watermarking will be applied at the model level, which means it will be present no matter which Claude product or surface the text comes from.”

The precise extent of editing required to remove the watermark remains unclear. We have reached out to Anthropic for further clarification and will provide updates as new information becomes available.

Anthropic clarified that this watermarking functionality will be implemented across various products, including the Claude platform API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag.

This move by Anthropic reflects a broader trend among platforms now rapidly adopting watermarking for AI-generated content, driven by user backlash and the imperative to preempt regulatory oversight. For instance, last week, AI music platform Suno announced it would mark tracks created on its service following several legal challenges. Similarly, last month, newsletter service Substack partnered with Pangram to identify AI-generated content, with CEO Chris Best notably coining the term 'Claudefishing' to describe the practice of using AI for content creation.

Beyond Anthropic, several other prominent companies, including Black Forest Labs, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Synthesia, have also publicly committed to adhering to the EU’s transparency code.
