On Thursday, Anthropic updated its usage policy to codify new restrictions on election interference, weapons software, and surveillance. However, the most significant shift is a fresh ban on prolonged verbal abuse of the model, which is now explicitly prohibited.

Since an update in August, Claude has been instructed to terminate conversations involving "persistently harmful or abusive user interactions." Yet, the latest policy explicitly bars users from initiating those types of discussions.

"The policy update is intended to apply only in extreme cases where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models without a discernible purpose," the post explains. "It does not apply to common user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research."

This modification follows Anthropic's efforts to collaborate with prominent religious scholars, in some instances seeking to persuade them that Claude might possess consciousness or a soul.

Additional sections of the policy forbid users from participating in deceptive campaigns, such as using Claude to operate fake accounts or fabricate news outlets. Furthermore, rules prohibiting voter deception or election disruption have been consolidated under the "Do Not Undermine Democratic Processes" heading.
