For the first time, Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in the number of verified business customers, according to this month's AI Index released by the fintech firm Ramp.
The comprehensive survey, which compiles expense data from Ramp’s clients, reveals that 34.4% of participating businesses are now paying for Anthropic's services, positioning it ahead of all other AI laboratories. In contrast, OpenAI's services are utilized by 32.3% of these businesses.
This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it is the first occasion Anthropic has secured the leading position in this competitive landscape.
Ramp economist Ara Kharazian told TechCrunch, “Anthropic has already been in the lead amongst the high adoption groups like finance, tech, professional services.” He further elaborated on the shifting dynamics, stating, “It’s across the other firms where OpenAI still has a lead, but that has been shrinking over the past couple of months.”
While the index is based solely on companies that use Ramp and thus may not serve as a perfect representation of the entire marketplace, its sample size of over 50,000 companies ensures it is sufficiently broad and diverse to carry substantial weight.
More importantly, the broader industry trend appears to align with these findings. On OpenRouter’s leaderboard, which draws from a distinct user base, OpenAI last outranked Anthropic in December 2025.
According to Ramp’s figures, the preceding 12 months have been particularly transformative for Anthropic. In May 2025, only 9% of businesses were subscribing to Anthropic products, a figure that dramatically climbed by 26% over the subsequent year. During this identical period, OpenAI’s market share experienced a 1% decline, while the overall proportion of businesses leveraging some form of AI product grew by 9%.
Kharazian expressed some skepticism regarding the long-term endurance of this advantage, detailing his perspectives in a blog post. However, he affirmed that the success witnessed over the past year serves as compelling evidence of Anthropic's effective strategic choices.
“What Anthropic did worked really well,” Kharazian conveyed to TechCrunch, explaining their approach: “which was — start with a very technical customer base, focus on their needs, really succeed in execution and then start broadening out through tools like Cowork.”
