Weeks after OpenAI unveiled a new suite of conversational models and upgraded ChatGPT’s voice capabilities, rival Anthropic is making its own strategic move to enhance Claude's voice-friendliness with a significant new update. The company announced Thursday that users can now choose between its Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models for voice interactions.
Claude’s voice mode, initially launched last year and powered by the Haiku model, provided swift responses but struggled with more complex tasks. With this latest update, the voice mode will now intelligently select the last model a user engaged with in text chat and default to its fastest available version.
Anthropic emphasizes that the expanded voice mode is designed to support users through longer and more intricate conversations. This includes offering feedback on communication styles, assisting with the practice of client pitches, and facilitating brainstorming sessions for product market research.
Furthermore, Claude’s voice mode now boasts the ability to integrate with a variety of popular applications such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. This powerful functionality allows users to issue voice commands to update meeting slots, draft emails, or create documents directly within Notion.
Notably, this robust integration capability presents a key distinction from OpenAI’s voice mode, which, despite recent enhancements to its conversational style, still lacks the ability to leverage different external tools to accomplish tasks.
Earlier this year, Anthropic introduced multilingual support to Claude’s voice mode in a beta phase. The company states that users can now converse in various languages, although they are currently required to manually specify their preferred language. At present, Anthropic supports English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), and Spanish (Latin America/Spain).
The new voice mode is currently available in beta to all users across various platforms. However, free users will experience certain limitations, being restricted to the Haiku model and connectivity with only one external application.
