Anthropic has enhanced Claude's memory capabilities with a new prompt and an intuitive importing tool, designed to facilitate the transfer of user data from other artificial intelligence platforms.

This strategic update significantly streamlines the transition for users migrating from rival chatbots, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini. Critically, Claude's memory feature is now accessible to users on the free plan, complemented by a specialized prompt and dedicated tool for data import. These enhancements empower users to seamlessly transfer the contextual information and interaction history their previous AI has accumulated, thereby eliminating the need to re-educate Claude from scratch.

The ability to import and export memories within Claude has been available since October, coinciding with the initial rollout of the option for users to activate Claude’s memory. Previously exclusive to paid subscribers, this memory functionality is now universally accessible to all Claude users, who can activate it via the "settings" and "capabilities" menus. Within this same interface, users will discover the new memory importing tool, which guides them through copying a pre-written prompt into their former AI system and subsequently pasting the generated output back into Claude’s dedicated import interface.

The introduction of this upgraded memory importing tool arrives as Claude experiences a notable surge in popularity, fueled by innovative applications like Claude Code and Claude Cowork. This growth follows Anthropic's recent launch of its Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 models last month, which the company asserts offer superior performance in coding tasks and handling complex operations, including spreadsheet manipulation and form completion.

Adding to its recent prominence, Anthropic has also garnered significant attention for its principled stance against demands from the Pentagon to relax the ethical guardrails on its AI models. The company publicly declared that it has established "red lines" concerning applications involving mass surveillance and fully autonomous lethal weapons.
