Anthropic published a report on Friday highlighting significant changes in its workforce composition and the nature of work over the past year.

The company views these internal trends as a preview of how AI will reshape labor demand and hiring across the broader economy, especially given their extensive integration of AI into workflows. Even for organizations that do not adopt AI as deeply as them, the report provides valuable insight into their current operational strategies.

A key trend is the reduction in junior staff. The proportion of junior-level employees in technical departments dropped from 21% to 14% since early 2025, with junior technical hires falling even more drastically from 27% to 9%.

Additionally, technical teams now comprise a smaller portion of the total workforce, decreasing from 61% to 56%. Anthropic attributes this shift to the natural expansion of business functions alongside the rise of coding tools that allow non-technical staff to write software.

One employee noted the intense pressure to utilize Claude for all tasks. According to an April 2026 survey, 27% of staff reported increased productivity, while 20% said their roles had shifted from executing work to managing the AI. One engineer likened this to babysitting, stating that multiple "Claudes" demand attention equally.

The report highlights "human attention and judgment" as a bottleneck for productivity, as Claude generates a massive volume of text requiring reading and organization.

Despite the shift, AI adoption has boosted productivity metrics, including code output, sales closure, and contract processing. The company maintains that while more code doesn't guarantee better code, they have found no evidence of declining quality.

Finally, meeting time has risen, with calendar data showing a 20% increase for all employees and a 16% increase for technical contributors. This uptick reflects the company's emphasis on "human trust and accountability," with staff emphasizing the indispensability of face-to-face coordination.
