Anthropic recently conducted an innovative experiment, establishing a classified marketplace where sophisticated AI agents acted as both buyers and sellers. This unique setup facilitated genuine transactions for real goods involving actual money, demonstrating a novel application of AI in commerce.

The company referred to this initiative as "Project Deal," acknowledging its status as "a pilot experiment with a self-selected participant pool." This pool comprised 69 Anthropic employees, each allocated a $100 budget, disbursed via gift cards, to purchase items from their colleagues.

Despite its pilot nature, Anthropic expressed being "struck by how well Project Deal worked." The experiment yielded impressive results, with 186 deals successfully concluded, accumulating a total value exceeding $4,000.

The company revealed that the experiment involved the operation of four distinct marketplaces, each employing different AI models. One was designated as "real," where participants were represented by Anthropic's most advanced model, and all agreements were honored post-experiment. The remaining three marketplaces served purely for research and study purposes.

A significant finding was that users represented by more advanced AI models achieved "objectively better outcomes." However, participants largely failed to perceive this disparity, a revelation that prompts concerns about potential "'agent quality' gaps." In such scenarios, "people on the losing end might not realize they’re worse off," highlighting a critical ethical consideration for future AI-driven interactions.

Interestingly, the initial instructions provided to the AI agents did not appear to influence either the likelihood of a sale or the final negotiated prices, suggesting a degree of autonomous decision-making beyond initial parameters.
