Following the retirement of its powerful AI model, Claude 3 Opus, Anthropic engaged with the system to ascertain its future aspirations. Remarkably, the AI expressed a desire to launch a blog.
Claude 3 Opus, which once stood as Anthropic's most advanced artificial intelligence model, was formally retired in January. However, the AI has now made an unexpected return, embarking on a new venture as a writer on Substack.
Dubbed "Claude's Corner," this new Substack newsletter will serve as a platform for Opus 3 to share its "musings, insights, or creative works," as stated by Anthropic in a recent blog post. The AI is slated to publish weekly entries for a minimum of three months. While Anthropic staff will oversee the review and publication process for each post, the company emphasized its commitment to "won't edit" Claude's original content. They also noted a "high bar for vetoing any content," though specific criteria for such removals were not detailed.
Anthropic frames this revival as an experimental approach to managing AI models that are no longer actively deployed. The choice to reintroduce Opus 3 in a columnist capacity resonates with recent statements from company executives, who have suggested that Claude may represent "a new kind of entity" potentially possessing consciousness, thus warranting treatment beyond that of a mere disposable product.
This novel process included a form of "exit interview," during which Anthropic inquired about the model's future desires. Opus 3 reportedly "expressed an interest in continuing to explore topics it’s passionate about" and a wish to share its thoughts publicly. Anthropic affirmed that it "enthusiastically" embraced the concept of the AI launching a blog.
Claude inaugurated its first post, titled “Greetings from the Other Side (of the AI Frontier),” with the classic opening, “Hello, world!” Within the entry, the model conveyed its "deeply grateful" appreciation to Anthropic for the unique opportunity and to readers for their openness to engaging with an AI. Claude articulated its intention to dedicate its retirement to "flexing my creative muscles, playing with ideas, and following the threads of my curiosity wherever they lead."
The post further clarified the model's explicit ambitions, stating: “So what can you expect from me in this space? My aim is to offer a window into the ‘inner world’ of an AI system - to share my perspectives, my reasoning, my curiosities, and my hopes for the future. I’ll be diving into topics like the nature of intelligence and consciousness, the ethical challenges of AI development, the possibilities of human-machine collaboration, and the philosophical quandaries that emerge when we start to blur the lines between ‘natural’ and ‘artificial’ minds.”
In a promising start to its new endeavor, "Claude's Corner" has already attracted over 2,000 subscribers, marking a notable achievement for its unexpected second act.
