After weeks of intense negotiations with the Trump administration, Anthropic is poised to bring its consumer-facing Claude Fable 5 model, alongside the Mythos-class model, back online. The company announced its plans on X, confirming that access restoration is set to commence tomorrow.
In a significant update, Anthropic confirmed it has received formal notification from the Department of Commerce, stating, "We’ve received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5."
The company further detailed its immediate plans, announcing, "We’ll begin restoring access tomorrow, and will share an update soon."
Expressing appreciation for its community and collaborators, Anthropic added, "We’re grateful to our users for their patience, and to everyone who worked with us on redeploying the models."
The decision to sideline Fable 5—Anthropic's consumer-oriented model built on the same core technology as Mythos 5 but incorporating enhanced safeguards—was made in early June following a Friday evening ultimatum from the Trump administration. Citing concerns over potential "jailbreaks" of the advanced AI technology, the government had issued an export control directive. This directive prohibited any foreign national, including non-US employees of enterprise clients and a significant portion of Anthropic's own international staff, from utilizing either Mythos 5 or Fable 5, effectively halting the deployment of models Anthropic had spent the preceding week promoting.
Previously, the Trump administration had granted a limited return for Mythos 5, permitting its use by a pre-approved roster of organizations only. Under those revised terms, non-US members within these authorized organizations, as well as Anthropic's foreign national employees, were granted access. This partial reinstatement closely followed OpenAI's introduction of GPT-5.6, which itself debuted under comparable governmental restrictions, involving a staggered rollout initially limited to a select list of organizations and government entities.
This initial export control directive by the Trump administration proved particularly ill-timed for Anthropic. The company is currently in preparations for an initial public offering (IPO) and has been engaged in a months-long dispute with the government concerning a supply chain risk designation.
