Anthropic Eyes $3.5B Funding Round, Valued at $61.5B

AI startup Anthropic is finalizing a $3.5 billion funding round that would value the company at $61.5 billion, according to sources. The firm behind the Claude chatbot is attracting backing from venture capital firms such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, General Catalyst, and Bessemer Venture Partners.  This round is significantly larger than the $2 billion reported last month, reflecting growing investor confidence in AI technology despite concerns over China’s lower-cost competitor DeepSeek. Investors have been pouring funds into AI startups, with nearly half of all U.S. funding dollars last year going to companies in this booming sector. Anthropic’s fundraising effort underscores the strong appeal of American AI ventures even as global competition intensifies.  Rival OpenAI is also in talks for a mega funding round that could value it as high as $300 billion, highlighting the fierce rivalry in the foundation model space. Anthropic was co-founded by former executives from the Sam Altman-led venture, along with siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, and was valued at around $18 billion in a previous fundraise led by Menlo Ventures.  On Monday, the company also launched its advanced AI model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, designed to deliver faster responses and display its reasoning process step by step. This upgrade is aimed at giving Anthropic a competitive edge in the generative AI industry.  The launch of Claude 3.7 Sonnet marks a key milestone as the company seeks to build on its reputation as a major rival to OpenAI. While Anthropic has not yet commented on its funding plans, the combined move of raising new capital and releasing an enhanced model demonstrates its commitment to advancing AI technology. As competition heats up, Anthropic’s bold strategy may inspire other startups to accelerate their own investment efforts.
