Anthropic is poised to significantly reduce the need for human oversight in programming with Claude Code, announcing that auto mode will become the default setting for all Pro, Max, and Team accounts, effective August 14.
The company first unveiled a test version of auto mode in March, positioning it as a method to achieve an optimal balance between operational speed and user control. As detailed in Anthropic’s recent announcement on Friday, when Claude Code operates in auto mode, it will autonomously proceed with tasks without presenting prompts for human approval at each step. This process will continue uninterrupted unless an action is specifically determined to be “irreversible, destructive, or aimed outside your environment.”
Moreover, Anthropic revealed that auto mode demonstrated superior safety performance during testing compared to traditional manual review. In a study involving 1,053 paid testers, auto mode successfully identified 89% of harmful actions, a stark contrast to human review, which caught only 13.6%. This significant disparity is attributed to the tendency for manual review to become habitual, with users approving 97% of permission prompts in Claude Code.
Reinforcing this shift, Boris Cherny, Head of Claude Code, shared his personal endorsement on X, stating, “The team and I use Auto mode exclusively, and have been for many months. I couldn’t imagine going back to permission prompts!”
In parallel with these advancements, Anthropic has also implemented enhanced safety features, including prompt injection screening and customizable hard deny rules. These measures are specifically designed to prevent malicious activities such as data exfiltration and further strengthen the platform's security posture.
