Jack Clark, a co-founder of Anthropic and its Head of Public Benefit, has verified that the artificial intelligence firm informed the Trump administration about its recently developed Mythos model.

This model, unveiled last week, is deemed too hazardous for public release, primarily attributed to its formidable alleged cybersecurity functionalities.

During an interview at Semafor’s World Economy summit this week, Clark elaborated on the company’s ongoing engagement with the U.S. government, even as it pursues legal action against them.

In March, Anthropic initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s Department of Defense (DOD), following the agency's designation of the company as a supply chain risk. The core dispute with the Pentagon revolved around the extent of military access to Anthropic’s AI systems, particularly for applications such as widespread surveillance of American citizens and the development of fully autonomous weaponry. Notably, OpenAI ultimately secured the contract.

At the summit, Clark minimized the significance of the administration's "supply chain risk" label, characterizing it as merely a “narrow contracting dispute” and asserting that Anthropic did not wish this issue to overshadow its commitment to national security.

Clark articulated his company's stance, stating, “Our position is the government has to know about this stuff, and we have to find new ways for the government to partner with a private sector that is making things that are truly revolutionizing the economy, but are going to have aspects to them which hit National Security, equities, and other ones.” He unequivocally added, “So absolutely, we talked to them about Mythos, and we’ll talk to them about the next models as well.”

This confirmation follows reports last week indicating that Trump administration officials were actively encouraging major financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley, to test the Mythos model.

During the interview, Clark also delved into other societal ramifications of artificial intelligence, specifically touching upon topics such as unemployment and higher education.

While Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei previously cautioned that advancements in AI could lead to unemployment levels akin to the Great Depression, Clark offered a nuanced disagreement. He clarified that Amodei's projections stem from a belief that AI's capabilities will escalate far more rapidly than generally anticipated.

Clark, who oversees Anthropic’s team of economists, stated that the company has thus far observed only “some potential weakness in early graduate employment” within specific sectors. He added that Anthropic is prepared to address any significant shifts in the employment landscape.

When pressed to advise college students on which academic majors to pursue or avoid in light of AI’s influence, Clark offered a general recommendation: the most valuable fields of study are those that “involve synthesis across a whole variety of subjects and analytical thinking about that.”

Clark elaborated on this perspective, explaining, “That’s because what AI allows us to do is it allows you to have access to sort of an arbitrary amount of subject matter experts in different domains.” He concluded, “But the really important thing is knowing the right questions to ask and having intuitions about what would be interesting if you collided different insights from many different disciplines.”
