Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently contested claims that he has presented an excessively negative outlook on artificial intelligence and its future impact.
These remarks were a direct response to investor Gavin Baker, who asserted on both the All-In podcast and X that Amodei's cautionary statements regarding AI's risks have contributed to a growing backlash in the United States, notably targeting data centers.
Baker contended that Amodei had “lost the argument” concerning AI regulation—despite Anthropic's support for specific measures, such as a California bill mandating transparency for major AI firms. Given Amodei's impending role as “the CEO of one of the most important companies in the world,” Baker advised, “I respectfully think he should make an effort to be a more positive advocate for his own industry.”
While Baker is not alone in suggesting that AI skepticism and government scrutiny partly arise from heeding the severe warnings of certain AI executives, Amodei refuted this notion. He countered that his “messaging has been disproportionately negative,” asserting instead that his communications have been “about equally balanced between risks and benefits.” He further explained that his essay, “Machines of Loving Grace,” was penned because he “didn’t feel the AI industry was painting an inspiring enough picture of how the technology could radically transform the world for the better.”
Nevertheless, Amodei conceded that “the public has a negative view of AI” and concurred that “this is a big problem.” His point of divergence, however, was the assertion that this sentiment is “primarily caused” by warnings from himself “or any other AI leader about AI’s risks.”
“I think it is fundamentally a crisis of trust,” Amodei stated, elaborating that “ordinary people don’t trust companies, governments, or the tech industry and always suspect that we are cooking up some new way to screw them over.”
The concept of “trust” frequently surfaces in discussions surrounding the AI industry, particularly in relation to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a notable rival of Amodei. According to Amodei, this is a crisis that has developed over “decades in the making,” with the current AI backlash representing “just the latest iteration of it.”
“I think by far the most accurate criticism of AI companies including Anthropic is that we haven’t yet delivered on our big promises to benefit the world,” Amodei asserted. He continued, “That is totally on us, and I think it’s the criticism you should be making, instead of all this stuff about messaging and marketing.” He also noted that Anthropic is “doing our best to fix this.”
Regarding regulation, Amodei contended that Baker was presenting “a false choice” between the widespread, unregulated distribution of AI and the concentration of the technology among a few companies through regulatory means.
“I know that there’s a sort of Silicon Valley shorthand where regulation = regulatory capture = concentration of power, but I’ve always found this to be an overly simplified picture of the world,” Amodei remarked. He added, “Many people outside this bubble think of regulation as something that constrains corporate power and benefits ordinary people.”
Amodei further clarified that he doesn’t “necessarily agree with that perspective either,” explaining that this is precisely “why Anthropic has always made its policy proposals very carefully.”
“We try very hard to make proposals that disadvantage (slow down) frontier AI companies while *advantaging* smaller competitors,” he affirmed.
