Today, Anthropic announced the creation of a "public benefit fund" designed to provide the company with "increased flexibility and scale" to support projects aimed at promoting societal good.

The company plans to commit 5% of its shares to this fund, which will be structured as a wholly-owned entity. Furthermore, Anthropic has the option to contribute an additional 2% for every 50% increase in the company's valuation. To illustrate potential uses, the organization suggested funds could be used for "large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations."

In addition to this initiative, Anthropic is addressing the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the job market, having already committed $200 million to study this issue. However, the company noted, "Given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed. The Fund will have the versatility to pursue them."

This announcement arrives amidst a backdrop of growing negative public sentiment towards the AI industry. CEO Dario Amodei has characterized this situation as "fundamentally a crisis of trust."

Regarding the decision-making process for funding, Anthropic stated that it will release further details regarding the structure and governance of the fund in the coming months.
