A new opt-in enhanced protection mode utilizes the power of cloud-based Gemini AI models to evaluate the intentions behind messages from unrecognized senders.
Google is rolling out advanced scam defense tools designed to empower users against mobile fraud. Building upon the existing Scam Detection feature in Google Messages, a newly introduced "enhanced protection" setting will become available in the coming weeks. This feature uses cloud-based Gemini AI models to rapidly analyze a potential scammer's motives during conversations with unknown contacts.
"Scammers often disguise their true motives behind slow-burn conversations," Google stated in its update announcement. "This secure cloud analysis augments and extends our existing on-device detection, allowing us to identify novel and sophisticated attacks, actively uncovering and stopping abusers who try to hide their tracks."
Crucially, user data remains encrypted during this AI analysis and is processed within a secure dedicated space that only the user can access. The enhanced protection mode will be opt-in, utilizing on-device Gemini Nano AI to scrutinize real-time web signals in unfamiliar URLs before they are opened, effectively determining if the links are malicious.
Beyond the Messages app, Google is announcing additional security measures, such as blocking apps from enabling call forwarding and alerting users if such attempts are made. Furthermore, the system will automatically conceal sensitive information while screen-sharing in both Chrome and Android WebView.
The scam detection feature, originally introduced on Pixel phones last year, is now expanding to a wider array of Android manufacturers including Honor, Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, Xiaomi, and others. Google projects that this feature will reach "hundreds of millions of additional users later this year."
