Amazon has officially rolled out its significantly enhanced, AI-powered digital assistant across the entire United States. This launch introduces flexible new access tiers, notably including a complimentary option for users who do not subscribe to Prime.
The company confirmed that its generative AI-powered digital assistant, now branded as Alexa Plus, is fully accessible to all Prime members in the U.S. through any Alexa-enabled device, Alexa.com, and the Alexa mobile application. For non-Prime subscribers, a new free tier offers access via the web and app, with an alternative option to secure unlimited Alexa Plus access for $20 per month.
Alexa Plus first debuted in an Early Access program in March 2025, gradually expanding its reach to tens of millions of users over the past year, as shared by Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Echo, in an interview with The Verge.
This smarter, more conversational assistant is now transitioning out of its Early Access phase to become officially available to all users in the U.S. Early Access recently became available in Canada and Mexico, and Rausch indicated that a closed Beta program is currently underway in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, with Early Access anticipated to follow in these European markets.
For existing Prime members utilizing Echo devices, Alexa Plus will be delivered through an imminent software upgrade, or may already be active. Users can also initiate the upgrade by saying “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa Plus” or by logging into their Amazon account at Alexa.com. Rausch confirmed that users retain the flexibility to opt out of this upgrade or revert to the previous Alexa version after upgrading.
Non-Prime individuals interested in experiencing Alexa Plus can access it by visiting Amazon.com/AlexaPlus.
Representing a comprehensive overhaul of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant, Alexa Plus is built upon an entirely new architecture and powered by advanced large language models developed by Amazon Nova and Anthropic. This transformation elevates it from a basic command-and-control system to a “foundational AI assistant” capable of understanding and responding to natural language with remarkable fluency.
Beyond its traditional functions of setting timers, playing music, and managing smart home devices, the enhanced voice assistant can now address intricate queries, fulfill more detailed requests, and simplify smart home management by enabling users to create routines using only their voice.
Its capabilities further extend to managing family calendars and meal plans, offering step-by-step recipe instructions, facilitating restaurant reservations, booking services like Uber or home repair professionals, and even purchasing concert tickets.
Additionally, Alexa Plus functions as a text-based chatbot, accessible through Alexa.com on the web, where it is optimized for in-depth research, strategic planning, and content generation.
Rausch noted a significant surge in user interaction, stating that the Alexa Plus voice assistant has seen double the usage since its launch. He added, “We continue to see week-over-week customer engagement with Alexa Plus going up.”
The chatbot iteration of Alexa Plus is a more recent development; its web interface was introduced last month, coinciding with a redesign of the Alexa app to prominently feature the chatbot. Rausch acknowledged, “A lot of customers aren’t sure about subscribing to an additional AI chatbot experience for an additional $20 a month.” He then expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m excited that Prime customers just have unlimited access to a world-class foundational AI assistant as part of their Prime benefits.”
