Amazon is enhancing its Alexa for Shopping tool to help users identify potential phishing attempts. The assistant can now compare a received message against a comprehensive record of every message Amazon has ever sent, analyzing the content, formatting, and sender.

Users can simply ask Alexa for Shopping about a specific email, text, or call to verify its legitimacy. The AI checks the message's details against Amazon's historical records to determine if it is authentic.

As Amazon emphasizes, the system will only confirm a message is real if it is "completely certain." For instance, if a customer asks, "Did Amazon just text me an OTP from 98626? Message came around 4:50pm," Alexa will confirm, "This was a genuine One Time Password from Amazon."

Should Alexa determine that a message is not from Amazon, it directs customers to verify their orders within the app and contact Amazon's support team directly. This follows an existing protocol where suspicious messages can be forwarded to "[email protected]".

In addition to this security feature, Amazon recently introduced an "Update Me When" capability to the Alexa for Shopping service, allowing users to track new product releases automatically.
