David Luan, a prominent figure who spearheaded Amazon’s development of the Nova Act AI browser agent, is set to leave the company.
After a tenure of less than two years, Luan, who led Amazon’s San Francisco AI lab, announced his impending departure in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday. He stated, “I’ll be leaving Amazon at the end of this week to cook up something new.” Luan further elaborated on his decision, noting, “There’s incredible work to be done at Amazon and opportunities for me to take on more areas. But with AGI so close, I decided to spend 100% of my time on teaching AI systems brand new capabilities.” This indicates his intention to dedicate his efforts to advancing Artificial General Intelligence.
This high-profile exit from a top AI developer occurs as Amazon reportedly grapples with maintaining its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Internal sentiment suggests challenges, with some employees reportedly likening the company's in-house AI offerings to "Amazon Basics." The news also follows the recent rollout of Alexa Plus, Amazon's updated AI assistant, to all users in the US a few weeks prior, though some early adopters have expressed a preference for the original Alexa experience.
Luan initially joined Amazon in 2024, bringing with him a team from his startup, Adept, whose AI agent technology Amazon had licensed. During his time at Amazon, he played a crucial role in the development of its Nova AI models, including the Nova Act AI agent. Nova Act, which debuted as a research preview in March, is designed to execute web searches, facilitate purchases, and respond to queries. At its launch, Amazon confirmed that Act was already integrated and operational within Alexa Plus.
