Amazon revealed on Tuesday its plan to broaden the availability of its healthcare AI assistant, Health AI, across its main website and app. Previously, this assistant was exclusively accessible through the One Medical app, a healthcare provider Amazon acquired for $3.9 billion in 2023.
Health AI offers a range of functionalities, including answering health-related inquiries, clarifying health records, facilitating prescription renewals, and scheduling appointments. Amazon stated that access to the assistant is not contingent on being a Prime subscriber or a One Medical member.
Amazon explained that while Health AI can provide answers to general health questions independently of an individual's medical data, its core design aims to function as a personalized health assistant. This personalized role allows it to offer more specific guidance and execute actions like connecting users with healthcare professionals and relevant treatments.
It is important to acknowledge the inherent risks associated with sharing personal health information with AI systems. Researchers have issued warnings against this practice, specifically highlighting concerns that companies may utilize user conversations for AI model training purposes.
In an official press release, Amazon stated its policy of training "Health AI models on abstracted patterns without directly identifying information." With access to this data, Health AI can then interpret lab results, diagnoses, and medical records to deliver precise, personalized responses concerning symptoms and medications, according to Amazon.
For individuals requiring professional medical attention, Health AI can facilitate connections with a One Medical provider. U.S. Prime members utilizing Health AI are entitled to up to five complimentary direct-message consultations with a One Medical provider for more than 30 prevalent conditions, such as cold and flu, allergies, acid reflux, pink eye, UTIs, erectile dysfunction, anti-aging skin care, and hair loss. Non-Prime members have the option to engage with One Medical providers via Amazon’s pay-per-visit service.
Users can register for Health AI through the dedicated Amazon Health page. As Amazon progressively rolls out access, individuals will be notified via email once the assistant becomes available to them.
Upon gaining access, users are required to either create or sign into their personal Amazon Health profile. Following this, they can initiate a conversation by inputting their health questions to Health AI directly on Amazon.com or within the Amazon mobile application.
To enable a more personalized experience, users have the option to grant Health AI permission to access their available medical records via the Health Information Exchange, the national system designed for secure patient medical data sharing.
