Amazon Offers Free AI Computing to Challenge Nvidia’s Dominance
Amazon offers $110M in free AI credits to researchers. The move aims to challenge Nvidia’s dominance with its custom Trainium chips.

Originally reported byreuters
On Tuesday, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the AI chip market. The company will offer $110 million in free computing credits to researchers using its custom AI chips, Trainium. With this initiative, AWS aims to attract top AI developers and shake up Nvidia’s stronghold in the field.
AWS plans to offer 40,000 first-generation Trainium chips to researchers, including those from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, Berkeley.
The goal is to give researchers access to high-performance AI chips for developing new models. With this initiative, AWS hopes to make a name for itself in the AI space, offering a flexible alternative to Nvidia’s popular chips.
Unlike Nvidia’s chips, which heavily rely on the Cuda software for programming, AWS is taking a different approach. The company will allow customers to directly program its chips by publishing its instruction set architecture.
The advanced step will give users more control and flexibility. This could be especially appealing to large customers who want to make custom adjustments to boost performance and reduce costs.
Gadi Hutt, who leads business development for AI chips at AWS, demonstrated:
"Think about folks that are using infrastructure and putting hundreds of millions of dollars, if not more" toward rented computing power. They would take any opportunity possible to increase performance and reduce the cost."
This move comes as AWS faces increased competition from Microsoft in the cloud computing market. By offering these AI chips and providing free credits, AWS aims to attract top AI developers and position itself as a key player in the AI chip industry.
