Amazon has unveiled an innovative AI-driven feature, enabling customers to pose product-related inquiries and receive immediate, conversational audio answers. Introduced on Tuesday, these responses are delivered by what the company terms “AI-powered shopping experts,” designed to present information in a natural, discussion-style format.
Dubbed “Join the chat,” this new functionality aims to streamline the shopping experience by offering crucial product insights without the need to navigate extensive descriptions or customer reviews. The AI synthesizes information on product attributes, user feedback, and other pertinent data. For instance, shoppers can inquire if a particular coffee maker is suitable for novices or ascertain, based on reviews, if a certain sweater has an itchy texture.
Amazon emphasizes that, unlike generic chatbots, this AI system leverages prior responses to deliver increasingly relevant and useful information, meticulously avoiding repetition. The goal is to replicate the experience of conversing with an informed store associate.
In a recent blog post, the company stated, “Customers can ask questions and actually steer where the conversation goes. Every question they ask influences what comes next, making the experience a conversation customers can join and customize.”
“Join the chat” integrates into a wider initiative known as “Hear the highlights,” which presents concise audio summaries across millions of product pages within the Amazon Shopping app. This “Hear the highlights” feature commenced testing in May of last year and is presently accessible in the U.S., though audio summaries are available only for a curated selection of products.
To utilize this functionality, users simply navigate to a product page within the app and select the “Hear the highlights” button, positioned beneath the product image. From this point, they can either listen to a succinct overview or engage the “Join the chat” icon to pose specific inquiries using text or voice. Notably, the audio playback can persist even while users continue browsing.
This latest capability enhances Amazon's expanding suite of AI-powered shopping instruments. These tools encompass Rufus, a generative AI assistant designed to aid customers in product research and comparison; Interests, which consistently monitors and presents new items tailored to a shopper's preferences; and “Help me decide,” a feature that recommends products based on an individual's search queries, browsing activity, and purchase history.
