Amazon is introducing "Alexa Podcasts," a new feature where two AI-generated hosts will discuss any topic a user selects.
This capability comes with Alexa Plus, Amazon's enhanced AI assistant, which, as announced on Monday, can now produce podcasts covering "virtually any topic." Users can provide Alexa Plus with a subject, and the AI assistant will first present an overview of the planned discussion by its AI hosts. This allows users to guide the conversation's direction and modify its duration before the episode is fully generated.
Amazon has showcased several examples of "Alexa Podcasts," featuring two AI hosts discussing diverse subjects such as the history of the Roman Empire, recent music releases, and predictions for the World Cup. Furthermore, users can instruct Alexa Plus to generate audio lessons on topics like the Apollo missions or create a podcast episode centered on a new hobby, such as photography. This functionality bears resemblance to the AI-generated podcasts available through NotebookLM, a feature recently integrated into Microsoft Edge.
The AI-generated podcast episodes will source their information from a network of 200 news publications with which Amazon has partnered, including reputable outlets such as Reuters, the Associated Press, The Washington Post, Vox, and Politico. Alexa Plus itself was made available to all U.S. users in February and has since been integrated into Amazon's online marketplace.
Upon completion of an episode, users will receive a notification on their Echo Show device and within the Alexa app. Tapping this notification will initiate playback, and episodes can also be accessed through the "Music and More" section on the Echo Show or directly via the Alexa app.
