The ongoing rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic recently intensified, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly criticized his competitor's new cybersecurity model. During a recent podcast appearance, Altman suggested that Anthropic was leveraging fear-based rhetoric to exaggerate the capabilities and importance of its product.

Anthropic had previously unveiled its Mythos model earlier this month, making it available to a select group of enterprise clients. The company asserted that Mythos was too potent for general public release, citing concerns that cybercriminals could potentially weaponize its advanced features. However, this claim has been met with skepticism from various critics, who deem the rhetoric to be overstated.

Speaking on the "Core Memory" podcast, Altman implied that Anthropic's "fear-based marketing" strategy could inadvertently serve to restrict access to advanced AI to a select, exclusive group. He remarked, "There are people in the world who, for a long time, have wanted to keep AI in the hands of a smaller group of people. You can justify that in a lot of different ways."

Altman further underscored his point with a stark analogy, stating, "It is clearly incredible marketing to say, 'We have built a bomb, we are about to drop it on your head. We will sell you a bomb shelter for $100 million.'"

It is worth noting that the use of fear-based marketing is not exclusive to Anthropic. A significant portion of the AI industry has, arguably, employed scare tactics and hyperbole to amplify the perceived power of its tools. The persistent narrative about AI's potential for catastrophic outcomes, including "end of the world" scenarios, has not solely originated from techno-skeptic activists; it has also been propagated by those actively developing and selling this technology to the public, a group that includes Altman himself.
