Alibaba's prominent Qwen AI initiative has experienced the departure of a key technical leader, occurring merely a day following the Chinese technology conglomerate's introduction of its new Qwen 3.5 open-weight small models.

Junyang Lin, identified as a pivotal technical leader within Alibaba's Qwen team, announced his decision to "step down" from the project via a post on X on Tuesday, offering no further details. His LinkedIn profile indicates he joined Alibaba in July 2019, subsequently integrating into the Qwen team in April 2023.

This sudden departure, which elicited significant reactions from both colleagues and industry collaborators, unfolds against a backdrop of escalating global competition among AI developers, as companies intensely pursue the creation of models capable of competing with those from industry leaders such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

The Qwen family of models from Alibaba has solidified its position as one of China's most significant open-weight AI initiatives, consistently delivering benchmark performance in recent releases that frequently parallels systems developed by prominent U.S. innovators. Alibaba initially launched the model in April 2023, subsequently making it available for public use in September, following the necessary regulatory approvals.

On Monday, Alibaba unveiled its Qwen 3.5 Small Model series, comprising four distinct models with parameter counts of 0.8B, 2B, 4B, and 9B. The company stated that these systems are intrinsically multimodal, engineered for diverse applications from on-device AI deployment to lightweight agent functionalities. This launch garnered considerable attention within the AI community, notably from Elon Musk, who remarked on X that the models exhibited "impressive intelligence density."

Mr. Lin's exit occurred precisely as the Qwen team was accelerating its efforts on new releases, provoking exceptionally strong responses from colleagues and collaborators who universally characterized his contribution to the project as indispensable.

Wenting Zhao, a research scientist within the Qwen team, characterized Lin's departure as "the end of an era," expressing gratitude on X for his pivotal role in propelling the project's advancements in open-source AI and engineering. Yuchen Jin, Chief Technology Officer of AI infrastructure startup Hyperbolic, credited Lin with fostering connections between Qwen and the international developer community, recounting instances of late-night collaborations with the team during critical model launches. Similarly, Tiezhen Wang, Head of APAC Ecosystem at Hugging Face, labeled Lin's exit as "an immense loss" for the Qwen initiative.

The specific reasons and circumstances surrounding Mr. Lin's departure continue to be undisclosed. He did not respond to inquiries for comment.

Chen Cheng, a contributor to the Qwen project, conveyed his profound sadness, stating he was "heartbroken" by the news. In a post on X, Cheng seemingly addressed Lin directly, asserting, "I know leaving wasn’t your choice," and highlighted that the team had been actively collaborating on model launches just hours prior to the announcement.

Concurrently, Binyuan Hui, another member of the Qwen team, has updated his X profile to reflect the status "formerly MTS @Alibaba_Qwen." Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether this indicates his departure from the company or the precise timing of this profile alteration.

Alibaba has not yet provided a response to requests for comment regarding the rationale behind this personnel change or the current leadership configuration of the Qwen team.
