Amazon has unveiled a significant enhancement to Alexa+, its next-generation artificial intelligence assistant, enabling users to place food orders from popular delivery services Uber Eats and Grubhub. This new functionality facilitates a conversational ordering experience, designed to mimic natural interactions such as speaking with a restaurant waiter or ordering at a drive-thru, according to Amazon.

The primary objective behind this latest Alexa+ feature is to cultivate a more intuitive and interactive ordering process. Effective immediately, users can initiate requests for specific cuisines, browse menu options, pose questions, and customize their meals, all within a continuous dialogue. The system allows for instant modifications, whether users decide to alter their order mid-conversation, add a dessert, or adjust item quantities.

To access this feature, users must link their existing Grubhub or Uber Eats account via the Alexa app. Upon successful linking, previous orders are automatically synchronized, streamlining the process for reordering favorite meals or discovering new restaurants. Users can then articulate their request, for example, by saying, “I want to order Italian for delivery,” prompting Alexa+ to present various restaurant choices. Once an order is finalized, users receive a comprehensive summary detailing all items in their cart, including quantities and prices.

This innovative food ordering experience is progressively rolling out to Alexa+ customers equipped with Echo Show 8 devices and larger. Amazon characterizes this development as a pivotal stride toward achieving its goal of establishing adaptive interaction models. This initiative also lays the foundation for future expansion of similar capabilities into other domains, such as grocery shopping and travel planning.

The introduction of this Alexa+ upgrade occurs amidst the broader impact of AI within the food industry. While fast-food chains have already implemented AI assistants at their drive-thrus, challenges persist, particularly concerning order accuracy. Notably, McDonald’s temporarily halted its AI initiative in 2024 following several errors, including one instance where an AI cashier mistakenly added nine sweet teas to a customer’s order. Similarly, Taco Bell has encountered its own set of issues, with viral videos highlighting inaccuracies made by its AI system.

Since its initial launch in the U.S. and subsequent expansion to the U.K., Alexa+ continues to evolve with an expanding suite of features. These include new personality styles for Alexa, such as a “Sassy” option tailored for adults, alongside other styles like Brief, Chill, and Sweet.
