Amazon is rolling out a new capability that will allow users to modify the personality of its AI assistant, Alexa+. On Wednesday, the company launched three distinct Alexa+ personality styles — Brief, Chill, and Sweet — each designed to alter the AI assistant's conversational tone.
According to Amazon, the Brief style will prompt Alexa+ to deliver shorter, more direct responses. The Chill style will enable Alexa+ to interact in a manner reminiscent of a relaxed friend, while activating the Sweet style will make Alexa+ warmer and more enthusiastic, offering encouragement and positivity.
The endeavor to imbue artificial intelligence with personality has long presented a complex challenge for model developers.
For some chatbot users, interacting with an overly flattering and affirming AI model, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, has reportedly led to an unhealthy reliance on the technology. Multiple lawsuits have alleged that, in certain cases, this interaction exacerbated users' existing mental health conditions, culminating in crises or even suicides.
Nevertheless, chatbot users have consistently demonstrated a preference for controlling their AI’s responses, often employing custom instructions to shape its personality. Addressing this demand, OpenAI introduced new ChatGPT features in December, allowing users to adjust the AI’s fundamental style and tone, including its warmth, enthusiasm, and use of emojis, among other attributes. Despite these enhancements, some users still voice complaints that the latest model is inherently too reassuring.
Amazon states that its new styles for Alexa+ are built upon five core dimensions that contribute to its personality: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor. Each style embodies specific levels across these five factors. For instance, the company explains that the Brief style is not only concise but also casual, direct, and employs minimal humor.
To change Alexa+'s style, users can either communicate directly with the AI assistant via a device like an Echo speaker or access the feature within the Alexa app’s Device Settings under the "Personality Style" option.
The company notes that these three styles represent only the initial launch, with plans for additional options to be introduced in the future.
