Amazon is significantly expanding the capabilities of its enhanced AI assistant, enabling it to interact with a broader spectrum of smart home devices.

This expansion comes through a new update for Amazon's Alexa Plus assistant, introducing innovative methods for connecting with smart home technology. The update will allow Alexa Plus to seamlessly integrate with products from major brands such as Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, iRobot, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo, and Eufy, among others, intelligently directing user requests to the appropriate device.

Amazon illustrates this enhanced functionality with a practical scenario: a user with a compatible washing machine could simply state, “Alexa, my kid’s soccer jersey could use a deep clean, but the tag says cold wash only.” Alexa Plus would then intelligently interpret the command, navigate the washing machine's settings, and select the optimal cold wash cycle. These advanced integrations are facilitated by Amazon’s new AI developer toolkit, designed to simplify the connection process for device manufacturers, even for those with “unique capabilities that weren’t supported before.”

Initially rolled out in February, Amazon’s revamped AI assistant has already demonstrated its capacity to manage multi-step requests and facilitate voice-activated routine creation. However, its current integration with third-party services is somewhat restricted, limited to platforms like Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Uber, Thumbtack, Expedia, Yelp, Square, and Angi.

To overcome these limitations, Amazon is embracing the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard engineered to enable AI models to interface with diverse external systems and tools. This strategic adoption will empower a wider array of brands to integrate with Alexa Plus, with companies such as Canva, Headspace, Priceline, Lyft, Cengage, Virgin Atlantic, and Weekend slated to launch their integrations later this year.

As a prime example, Priceline will soon allow customers to explore hotel options and complete travel bookings directly via Alexa Plus. Furthermore, Priceline, alongside Atom Tickets, Cengage, Fandango, and Taskrabbit, is preparing to introduce payment capabilities through Amazon Wallet, enhancing transactional convenience.
