Amazon has announced that its new conversational food ordering capability marks merely the initial phase for its significantly enhanced artificial intelligence assistant.
The tech giant is introducing an innovative method for users to place food orders through Grubhub and Uber Eats via Alexa, streamlining the process to eliminate the need for awkward, segmented interactions, even for simple additions like fries. Amazon emphasizes that the entire experience is designed to be highly conversational, allowing users to build their orders in a natural, restaurant-like dialogue.
This advanced functionality means that modifying an existing order, adjusting an item, or adding a beverage mid-conversation can be done effortlessly by simply stating the request, without waiting for Alexa to complete a response. Amazon clarifies that Alexa will only interject when a user requires assistance or poses a direct question.
In a press release, Amazon stated, “For years, voice assistants have operated on a call-and-response model: you ask, it answers.” The company further elaborated, “Now when you start an order, you’ll see a new conversational window where you can naturally explore, decide, and order with minimal back-and-forth with Alexa.”
This latest update is integral to Amazon’s broader strategic initiative to cultivate a more useful and conversational digital assistant, building upon the foundation laid by last year’s launch of Alexa Plus, its advanced generative AI-powered iteration.
Currently, this feature is being rolled out to Alexa Plus subscribers who own Echo Show 8 devices or larger, where real-time updates to their order will be visually displayed. Amazon has not yet provided a specific timeline for this rollout nor confirmed if the capability will extend to other Alexa-enabled gadgets.
To begin utilizing this service, users must link their Grubhub or Uber Eats account through the Alexa app. This can be achieved by navigating to More > Alexa+ Store > Food & Reservations within the application.
Once connected, saved restaurants and previous orders will automatically synchronize with Alexa. Users can search for establishments by name or cuisine, conveniently reorder a past meal, or initiate a completely new order. For instance, commands such as “show me desserts,” “show me some Italian restaurants,” or requests for kid-friendly suggestions are supported. A comprehensive summary of items in the cart will be presented before purchase, and users will receive order updates in the “For You” section or can simply inquire about their food's status directly with Alexa.
Amazon asserts that this enhancement is “just the start of our long-term vision for how customers can interact with Alexa.” The company has made substantial investments in overhauling its Alexa assistant, transforming its traditional command-and-control voice interface into the sophisticated, AI-powered Alexa Plus, which comprehends and responds to natural language.
