Amazon's AI assistant, Alexa+, is set to debut an additional personality option. The company revealed on Thursday its intention to broaden the array of personality styles available to users by introducing a "Sassy" mode, exclusively designed for adults. Amazon stipulates that users wishing to activate this Sassy persona will first need to complete enhanced security verification procedures within the Alexa application.
Furthermore, Amazon has clarified that this particular personality style will be inaccessible when Amazon Kids is active.
This latest addition complements existing options such as Brief, Chill, and Sweet, which were introduced just last month.
Upon enabling the Sassy option within the Alexa mobile application, users are presented with a warning indicating that this style incorporates explicit language, thereby necessitating the security verification. For iOS users, this process involved a Face ID scan.
The AI assistant itself described its new style as follows: "The Sassy style is built on one premise: help first, judge always. Every answer comes wrapped in wit and a well-placed roast — it’ll answer your question, it’ll just make you feel something about it first. Expect reality checks delivered with charm, compliments that somehow sting, and warmth you didn’t see coming. Equal-opportunity irreverence, zero apologies. Honest, sharp, and funny — and somehow that’s more helpful than helpful."
The Alexa application also previously issued a warning that this style might encompass "mature subject matter."
Nevertheless, subsequent inquiry revealed that this offering is not Amazon's equivalent of more open-ended adult AI companions, such as those seen with Grok. The AI assistant confirmed that the new option will strictly avoid topics including explicit sexual content, hate speech, illegal activities, personal attacks, or any content potentially causing harm to oneself or others.
This initiative represents the most recent demonstration of Amazon's strategy to enhance Alexa+'s customizability as it redefines the assistant for the generative AI era. By providing the assistant with a range of distinct personalities — including one specifically tailored for an adult audience — Amazon is aligning with a wider trend within the AI industry, where companies are actively exploring variations in tone, style, and persona to render their assistants more engaging and deeply personalized to individual user preferences.
