Amazon's enhanced generative AI assistant, Alexa+, has been rolled out to all U.S. customers starting Wednesday. This advanced AI capability will be complimentary for Prime members across all their devices. Additionally, non-Prime users can access Alexa+ for free through the Alexa website or mobile application, albeit with certain usage restrictions.

Daniel Rausch, Amazon's VP of Alexa and Echo, highlighted in a TechCrunch interview, "We have tens of millions of customers using Alexa+ now, and now we’re going to make it available to all Prime members…Prime members enjoy unlimited access — it’s basically a paid tier level of access that we’re including in Prime now." This signifies a significant expansion of the service.

Unveiled last year, Alexa+ operates on a "model agnostic" principle, leveraging a blend of Amazon's proprietary foundation models and those from third-party developers. This flexible architecture empowers the assistant to perform tasks far beyond its predecessor's basic functions, by dynamically utilizing the most suitable AI technology for each specific request.

As a sophisticated AI assistant, Alexa+ is capable of engaging in fluid, natural language conversations, supporting follow-up inquiries and dynamic back-and-forth interactions.

Beyond its established functionalities of managing smart home devices, setting timers, and providing news and weather updates, the updated assistant now performs a broad spectrum of tasks commonly handled by other AI chatbots. These include crafting trip itineraries, synchronizing shared calendars, discovering and archiving recipes, suggesting films, assisting with academic assignments, and delving into various topics.

Furthermore, extensive integrations with popular services such as Ticketmaster, Thumbtack, Uber, Angi, Expedia, Square, Yelp, Fodor’s, OpenTable, and Suno enable Alexa to execute more intricate operations, such as booking dinner reservations or hailing an Uber. Amazon has yet to disclose user adoption metrics for these "agentic" applications, where the AI independently completes multi-step tasks.

Throughout its year-long beta phase, Alexa users were given the choice to experience the AI feature or revert to the previous version. Amazon informed TechCrunch that the option to switch back to the older Alexa will persist, though the duration remains unconfirmed. This suggests Amazon aims to further refine the AI experience before mandating its use. While the percentage of opt-outs is a crucial indicator, Rausch mentioned this figure is in the low single digits, indicating a high level of user satisfaction with Alexa+.

Nevertheless, Amazon dedicated efforts to resolve bugs and incorporate user feedback leading up to this official launch. Some beta testers expressed concerns that Alexa+ was overly verbose or interrupted conversations inappropriately, while others voiced dissatisfaction with Alexa's new vocalization.

Amazon actively integrated this feedback, implementing various improvements over time. For example, the onboarding process was redesigned to include instructions on how to alter Alexa's voice, catering to users who favored Alexa's original sound. This "OG" voice remains an option as Alexa+ voice No. 2, now enhanced with AI for richer inflection.

Rausch elaborated on the onboarding adjustments, stating, “Eventually, we had her use her new version of her old voice, and then switch back again, just to show customers,” demonstrating the team's responsiveness to user preferences.

In a further effort to mitigate unwanted interruptions, Amazon implemented a feature where Alexa will now proactively inquire, “Is that for me?” when the AI system is uncertain about the intended recipient of a command or question.

Rausch also highlighted the customizable nature of the overall experience. Users have the flexibility to disable features like the "follow-on mode," which enables Alexa to continue listening for subsequent commands after an initial response.

When queried about the possibility of customizing the AI assistant's personality, similar to other chatbots offering options like personal, professional, quirky, or nerdy personas, Rausch concisely replied, “Stay tuned.”

Throughout the beta period, Amazon observed encouraging adoption trends in both usage and engagement, with minimal instances of customers reverting to the previous version. Following the upgrade to Alexa+, music streams surged by 25%, and user interaction with recipe features experienced a fivefold increase.

Collectively, customers are engaging in two to three times more conversations with Alexa+ compared to the original Alexa assistant.

Although Alexa+ is complimentary for U.S. Prime members, non-Prime subscribers have the option to purchase standalone access for $19.99 per month, a pricing structure competitive with services such as ChatGPT Plus.

Amazon clarified that the free web and mobile experience will operate under certain limitations, primarily designed to prevent misuse of the service.

Rausch commented on these restrictions, stating, “I think we’ve got some great, generous limits. We’re not talking about exactly what they are today, but…there are some [limits],” indicating that while present, they are intended to be reasonable.

The Alexa+ experience in the U.S. is accessible across a wide array of Alexa-enabled devices, encompassing Echo products, Fire TV, Alexa.com, the Alexa mobile app, and compatible devices from partners such as Samsung and Bose, with further integrations anticipated.
