Amazon unveiled a significant update to Alexa+ on Monday, introducing the capability for users to generate personalized podcast episodes on demand.

This new offering, officially named “Alexa Podcasts,” is being made available to customers across the U.S. starting today. Amazon characterizes this functionality as a tool that can “turn any topic you’re curious about into a podcast episode, ready in minutes.”

Utilizing this feature is straightforward: users simply need to instruct Alexa+ to produce a podcast on a subject of their interest. There is no requirement for users to upload documents, compose scripts, or undertake any prior planning. Instead, Alexa+ autonomously researches the request, compiles relevant information, and subsequently generates a concise overview detailing the episode's content. Following this, users retain the ability to customize parameters such as the episode's duration, narrative tone, and specific focus.

Upon finalization, Alexa+ employs AI-generated host voices to narrate the podcast. Once an episode is complete, users receive a notification via their Echo Show device and within the Alexa application. For convenient future access, episodes are automatically stored in the app’s dedicated “Music” and “More” sections.

This innovative feature underscores Amazon’s strategic effort to transform Alexa+ beyond the conventional role of a voice assistant. Moving past its primary functions of answering queries and managing smart home devices, Alexa+ is progressively evolving into a sophisticated personalized AI content creator.

Amazon highlighted its extensive partnerships with prominent news organizations, crucial for enhancing content accuracy and reliability. The company affirmed that Alexa+ leverages agreements with a wide array of outlets, including the Associated Press, Reuters, The Washington Post, Time, Forbes, Business Insider, Politico, USA Today, Condé Nast, Hearst, and Vox Media, along with over 200 local newspapers throughout the U.S., to access real-time information.

Looking beyond podcast generation, Amazon indicated its ongoing exploration into additional modalities of personalized AI audio. These future possibilities encompass custom news briefings and content derived from users’ proprietary documents and shared information.
