Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is reportedly shifting from a behind-the-scenes influencer in artificial intelligence to an active participant, with plans to establish and back his own dedicated AI laboratory. This development, initially reported by Bloomberg and subsequently confirmed to TechCrunch by an informed source, positions Chesky among a growing number of prominent Silicon Valley figures who express dissatisfaction with the capabilities of current frontier AI models.

While Airbnb has already integrated AI tools for coding, Chesky publicly stated last year that the company had refrained from forming partnerships with large language model (LLM) providers, citing that existing offerings were not yet mature enough for their needs.

Despite this past reluctance, Chesky possesses considerable insight into the AI landscape. His long-standing relationship with Sam Altman dates back to 2006, when they first connected through Y Combinator, the accelerator that incubated Airbnb. Their contact continued, and as OpenAI gained significant traction, Chesky began holding regular meetings with Altman, offering strategic advice on navigating the complexities of managing a rapidly expanding technology company.

Chesky's influence extended to critical moments, as he was reportedly considered for a position on OpenAI’s board and played a pivotal role in orchestrating Altman's return to power following his dismissal by the board of directors for a perceived lack of candor. During this period, Chesky provided guidance to Altman on public relations strategies and actively rallied support for him among key Silicon Valley luminaries.

However, this new venture suggests Chesky may now be entering a competitive arena with the company co-founded by his former mentee.

The precise focus of Chesky's forthcoming AI lab remains undisclosed, though the Bloomberg report indicates a potential emphasis on user interaction and design—areas that have consistently been central to his vision and strategy at Airbnb.

This approach bears a resemblance to Brett Adcock's initiative at Hark, the AI lab he launched late last year with the goal of developing an innovative user interface for an AI assistant, although Hark also features a strong focus on hardware products.

Importantly, Chesky will not be assuming a "founder mode" operational role in this new enterprise. An individual familiar with the situation confirms that he will maintain his position as Airbnb's CEO and will not personally lead the new lab. The future director appointed to this role will face the dual challenge of competing with other established AI labs and, presumably, managing expectations from a founding chair known for a hands-on, detail-oriented style.

A representative for both Airbnb and Brian Chesky declined to provide a comment on the matter.
