Airbnb has adjusted its timeline to build its own AI travel agent, officially announcing the feature will launch in the first half of 2027. The company provided further details in its Q3 shareholder letter, outlining how the agent functions, its capabilities, and how it distinguishes itself from standard AI chatbots.
In previous interviews, CEO Brian Chesky outlined the company’s strategy, envisioning an agent with a richer interface than a conventional chatbot. He emphasized that chatbots are not the ideal interface for travel, noting that users derive pleasure from the planning and anticipation phases. Chesky stated that the agent must not detract from the inspiration and browsing experience.
Chesky reiterated this perspective during the earnings call, asserting that users will not rely on a single AI agent for all tasks. He explained that while agents like Muse and Instinct are effective for routine tasks, travel planning differs because it is aspirational. He cited that 80% of travelers enjoy researching trips, a process involving photo viewing, home comparisons, and shared decision-making.
Airbnb described its agent as featuring a personalized interface built specifically for travel, generating a relevant interface around a user's query rather than simply responding as a chatbot. Chesky explained that the system moves away from text-heavy interactions, utilizing a library of hundreds of travel-specific components such as maps, photos, comparisons, calendars, and itineraries to assemble a real-time experience.
The executive described the agent as feeling like "generative UI," designed to present the appropriate interface at the right moment for specific travel needs. The company leverages nearly 20 years of data on host-guest interactions to inform the agent's design, allowing it to assist travelers beyond the initial booking.
The agent will provide post-booking support, handling reservation changes, payment issues, refunds, rebookings, and 24-hour safety support. Over time, Airbnb expects the agent to expand its scope to include services and experiences, areas that have become a larger focus following the company's redesign.
While the company previously anticipated a release within the next year, it is now committing to a consumer rollout in the first half of 2027. This announcement coincided with strong third-quarter earnings, where revenue grew 19% to $4.87 billion, surpassing analyst expectations. The company also raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens.
"Airbnb is back in growth mode," Chesky told analysts. It is rare for a marketplace of this size to reaccelerate growth, yet that is precisely what is happening, he added. Chesky noted that Q3 marked the fastest revenue growth for the company in over three years.
