Wabi, the AI startup that allowed users to build apps via prompts, is shifting its direction as demand for AI agents, such as Meta's Muse and Instinct, increases. The company announced this week that Wabi is transforming into an AI messenger, though it retains the ability to create apps that help users complete tasks.
Wabi's founder, Eugenia Kuyda, who previously established the AI companion startup Replika, described Wabi 2.0 as a "personal agent that does stuff for you and builds the interface you need in the moment."
The team introduces Wabi 2.0 as a new type of messenger designed to make apps and execute tasks for you and your friends. They describe it as building the operating system for the agentic era—software that adapts to your life, handles tasks, and creates space for what matters most.
This offers similar value to the original version of Wabi, but the interaction method has changed. Rather than competing directly with other "vibe-coding" tools, Wabi 2.0 aims to compete with AI agents that combine conversations and productivity tasks within a single interface.
This shift comes as companies like OpenAI consider how applications function within their generalized chatbot user interfaces. For instance, OpenAI recently announced updates to ChatGPT's plugins at its Dev Day, allowing apps to provide interactive experiences within the chatbot.
Kuyda explained on X that the new experience makes more sense for consumers who want to do more than simply type to an agent. She noted that the more you use a chat-only agent, the worse the experience becomes, as history and ongoing tasks become buried in an endless scroll.
"People don't just want to type-type-type; They want to tap-tap-tap, scroll, and look. They love what agents can do, but they also like software," she wrote. She stated that the most powerful agent will be the one that combines both interactions.
In another thread focused on families, users can create calendars for children's activities, language learning apps, and trackers for local kid-friendly events. Kuyda noted, "So far, personal agents have been one person, one chat, a stream of one-off tasks. We think the future is your agent, your apps, and your people in one place, running the parts of life that matter most, together," wrote Kuyda.
The new Wabi 2.0 app is currently available only by invite code, which are being distributed on X.
