Elgato has rolled out a significant update for its Stream Deck software, version 7.4, introducing comprehensive support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This advancement marks a pivotal shift in how users interact with their Stream Deck devices.
For users accustomed to manually activating Stream Deck functions, this update brings welcome news. Elgato now empowers users to offload these tasks to AI assistants. The Stream Deck 7.4 software, released today, integrates MCP support, enabling popular AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Nvidia G-Assist to autonomously locate and execute Stream Deck actions on your behalf.
Elgato clarified the new functionality in its official announcement, stating, "You still set up actions in Stream Deck app the same way you always have. MCP adds a new way to trigger them." The company further elaborated on the user experience, explaining, "Once everything is connected, you can type or speak requests and your AI tool will trigger the matching Stream Deck action."
MCP, which counts industry leaders like Microsoft, Anthropic, Figma, and Canva among its supporters, is rapidly emerging as a universal standard for AI integration, akin to a "USB cable" for artificial intelligence, allowing AI assistants to directly interface with third-party applications. Elgato's implementation of this protocol essentially provides a hands-free method for triggering any macro commands assigned to your Stream Deck, whether you're using physical hardware or the digital application.
Enabling this new feature is straightforward. Users need to update to the latest version of the Stream Deck app, navigate to "Preferences," and then select the "General" tab at the top of the application window. From there, checking "Enable MCP Actions" will create a dedicated "MCP Actions" profile, making any actions placed within it accessible to your connected AI tools.
For a complete setup, users will need to install an additional Node.js tool and the Elgato MCP Server bridge on their computer to facilitate the connection between AI tools and the Stream Deck app. While this process might seem intricate for those unfamiliar with MCP integrations, Elgato has thoughtfully provided a comprehensive, step-by-step installation guide to simplify the procedure.
