Artificial intelligence has permeated every facet of the music industry, from the initial stages of sample sourcing and demo recording to the final touches of digital liner notes and playlist curation. This widespread integration brings with it a host of technical and legal challenges, ignites fierce ethical debates, and fuels anxieties that a deluge of AI-generated content could overwhelm and displace working musicians. Fundamental questions persist: Is it genuine art or merely an output? What constitutes "really active" engagement in this new landscape? Suno has unveiled a significant update to its AI music model with the release of v5.5. While previous iterations primarily focused on enhancing fidelity and producing more natural-sounding vocals, v5.5 shifts its emphasis to providing users with greater control. This update introduces three new features: Voices, My Taste, and Custom Models.

According to Suno's release notes, the "Voices" feature was its most requested addition. It enables users to train the vocal model using their own voice. This can be achieved by uploading clean acapella recordings, finished tracks with backing music, or by singing directly into a phone or laptop microphone. Higher quality recordings require less data for training. To prevent unauthorized voice replication, Suno mandates users to speak a verification phrase, though concerns remain that existing AI models of celebrity voices might circumvent this safeguard.
