Universal Music Group (UMG) is reportedly at odds with AI music generator Suno regarding the widespread sharing of AI-created music, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The AI-powered music platform, Suno, is encountering significant hurdles in finalizing licensing agreements with major labels including Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. The Financial Times indicates that a central point of contention revolves around whether users should possess the freedom to share the AI-generated songs they produce.
“Universal wants AI-generated tracks to stay inside apps such as Suno and not spread freely across the internet. Suno, however, wants users to be able to share and distribute those songs more widely,” the Financial Times details. This fundamental disagreement comes after Suno, which enables users to craft AI music from simple text prompts, was named in a substantial copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Universal, Sony, and Warner Records in 2024.
Suno's functionality, which permits users to download AI-generated tracks directly from its application, has fueled concerns regarding the proliferation of fabricated music and AI-driven imitations of existing works. Earlier this year, a collective of artist representatives endorsed an open letter titled “Say No to Suno,” asserting that the platform “built its business on our backs, scraping the world’s cultural output without permission, then competing against the very works exploited.”
In a notable development, Warner Records previously withdrew its lawsuit against Suno last year following the establishment of a licensing agreement. This accord permits Suno users to incorporate the voices, names, likenesses, images, and compositions of artists who elect to participate in the program. Conversely, while Universal has also forged an agreement with another AI music creation tool, Udio, that particular deal explicitly prohibits users from downloading their AI-generated compositions from the app, underscoring UMG's consistent position on content distribution.
