Modal Labs, a burgeoning startup at the forefront of AI inference infrastructure, is reportedly in discussions to secure a new funding round that would elevate its valuation to approximately $2.5 billion. This potential capital injection, as confirmed by four individuals familiar with the negotiations, would signify a remarkable surge, more than doubling the company’s $1.1 billion valuation established less than five months prior.

Sources close to the matter have informed TechCrunch that General Catalyst is currently in negotiations to spearhead this anticipated funding initiative. Furthermore, Modal’s annualized revenue run rate (ARR) is understood to be around $50 million. It is important to note, however, that these discussions are still in their nascent stages, and the final terms of the deal remain subject to potential adjustments.

Both Modal Labs and General Catalyst were contacted for comment regarding these developments but did not provide a response.

Modal's core mission revolves around optimizing AI inference, which is the critical process of deploying trained artificial intelligence models to generate responses to user queries. By enhancing inference efficiency, the company aims to significantly lower computational expenses and minimize the latency between a user's input and the AI's subsequent output.

Modal Labs stands as one of several inference-centric companies currently garnering substantial investor interest in the booming AI landscape. This trend was underscored last week when its competitor, Baseten, revealed a $300 million funding round at an impressive $5 billion valuation, effectively more than doubling its $2.1 billion valuation achieved just months earlier in September. Concurrently, in October, Fireworks AI, a prominent inference cloud provider, successfully secured $250 million, valuing the company at $4 billion.

Further illustrating this dynamic market, January saw the creators of the open-source inference project vLLM announce their transition into a venture capital-backed startup named Inferact. This new entity successfully raised $150 million in seed funding, spearheaded by Andreessen Horowitz, at an $800 million valuation. Simultaneously, TechCrunch reported the commercialization of the SGLang team under the new identity, RadixArk, which, according to our sources, also secured seed funding at a $400 million valuation, with Accel leading the investment.

Modal Labs was co-founded in 2021 by CEO Erik Bernhardsson, whose extensive experience includes over 15 years dedicated to establishing and guiding data teams at prominent companies such as Spotify and Better.com, where he served as Chief Technology Officer.

Among the startup's early and notable investors are Lux Capital and Redpoint Ventures.
