ICANN has released its latest batch of top-level domain applications, and the trend is unmistakably artificial intelligence.

For the first time in many years, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is accepting submissions for new URL suffixes, such as .com, .org, and .pizza.

ICANN announced 1,615 applications from 481 distinct entities. The AI boom is evident, with ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, applying for the .agent suffix. Seven applicants, including OpenAI, sought .agi, while six, including OpenAI, applied for .asi, reflecting the push for "super intelligence" terminology. Additionally, four companies applied for .intelligence, and Meta is one of two vying for the lengthy .superintelligence domain. Notably, OpenAI submitted a total of 15 TLD applications, while Meta requested 21.

The applications generally fall into two categories: generic domains suitable for general use, such as .anime, .haha, and .jackpot, and branded domains reserved for specific companies. There are 345 brand applications in this cycle, ranging from .applebees to .zillow.

Major tech players are securing their digital identities, with Meta applying for .facebook, .instagram, .meta, .messenger, .frommeta, and .threads. Bluesky applied for .bsky to incorporate into usernames, while OpenAI secured .chatgpt, .codex, .openai, and .gpt. Anthropic also applied for .anthropic and .claude, aiming to utilize these for product pages and social media.

The adoption of alternative TLDs has faced challenges over the past few years. While some, like .ai or .app, have gained traction, the general public has struggled to embrace domains like .restaurant or .babysitting. Consequently, .com remains dominant. However, it is increasingly common for major brands to establish their own TLDs, a feat previously reserved for a select few like Google.

While these applications are not yet official and require approval by next year, the move signifies that domain names remain crucial in an AI-driven world. Even leading AI companies recognize the enduring value of a strong web address.
