For enthusiasts of role-playing games (RPGs), the joy of crafting a unique character and embarking on grand adventures is well-understood. Now, imagine an evolution of this concept: an AI-driven, text-based RPG where every interaction with a non-player character (NPC) unfolds without a predetermined script.
Latitude, the innovative startup renowned for its open-ended text adventure games featuring AI-generated “infinite storylines,” has recently unveiled its latest platform, empowering users to assume the role of game designers themselves.
This sophisticated AI-powered RPG platform, named Voyage, allows players to meticulously construct their own gaming worlds with the assistance of artificial intelligence. Users can define intricate settings, specifying elements such as regions, cities, distinct landmarks, primary quests, and even formidable villains. Furthermore, they have the capability to establish core game mechanics, including character abilities, progression systems, and combat scenarios.
To illustrate, should a player envision a tranquil fishing village plagued by a formidable sea monster, the AI will autonomously generate the necessary underlying code to materialize this concept. This foundational world can then be further customized before being shared with a broader community of players.
From a player's perspective, Voyage offers a diverse spectrum of experiences spanning various genres, ranging from lighthearted, cozy adventures to demanding, hardcore quests. As a text-based platform, gameplay involves reading through the unfolding narrative—with optional audio narration available—and inputting desired actions for their character.
Distinguishing itself from conventional RPGs, Voyage encourages truly imaginative player choices. For instance, when confronted by a goblin attack, instead of being limited to typical options like running, fighting, or hiding, players could opt for unconventional scenarios, such as becoming a "goblin therapist" to address the creatures' underlying issues, thereby avoiding conflict.
Upon a player entering their chosen actions, the AI dynamically narrates the outcome, detailing how NPCs react to these decisions. The absence of a fixed script ensures that interactions can frequently diverge into unforeseen pathways, often leading to surprising and sometimes remarkably eccentric conversations. For example, during internal testing, a troll who had restrained a character unexpectedly began to confide in them about its marital difficulties.
Character progression within Voyage is determined by a combination of the character's developed skills and a degree of fortune, reminiscent of dice rolls in traditional tabletop games. Additionally, characters can unlock specialized abilities by vanquishing bosses or successfully completing quests, such as employing a "Counterspell" to neutralize an enemy's magical attack. Notably, several abilities within Voyage draw creative inspiration from classic Dungeons & Dragons spells, adding a layer of nostalgic appeal.
Should players ever encounter a narrative impasse, a readily accessible chatbot is available to offer suggested actions or even facilitate skipping to different segments of the ongoing story.
The technological backbone of Voyage is Latitude’s proprietary World Engine, a sophisticated system that required five years of dedicated development. This engine integrates multiple AI systems to perform critical functions: narrating actions, managing gameplay flow, tracking characters and objects, and retaining backstories and interpersonal relationships. This comprehensive memory ensures game continuity, presenting players with dynamic NPCs who recall previous interactions, rather than generic figures with repetitive dialogue. For instance, betraying a character's trust might lead them to avoid the player or emerge as a rival in subsequent encounters.
“Characters aren’t just reactions to you, but have their own personality backstory, that react to you in ways that feel like real, and that’s really part of the magic of the engine,” Latitude CEO and co-founder Nick Walton shared with TechCrunch, underscoring the depth of these emergent personalities.
Latitude first garnered significant attention in the AI-native gaming space with the launch of AI Dungeon in 2019, a title that captivated millions of players.
“It exploded on the internet as one of the first times people interacted with generative AI,” Walton remarked. He further elaborated, “It sort of established that initial promise of what would happen if we could have games and worlds that aren’t all predefined in advance, that aren’t all scripted… Voyage takes that core concept and blows it up 10x farther from a single AI model to a full-blown world that you have deterministic systems, challenges, progression, and persistence, and solves all the problems that I think AI Dungeon alone couldn’t fully get to.”
Voyage is currently undergoing expanded beta testing, with plans for an open beta release later this year. Early testers on the platform have already engaged with over 160,000 unique AI-generated characters, each exhibiting distinct personalities. On average, players have made nearly 3,000 individual gameplay choices.
Coinciding with the launch announcement, Latitude also revealed a strategic partnership with Google’s AI Futures Fund. The Voyage platform seamlessly integrates Latitude’s proprietary models with advanced third-party models, including Google’s Gemini Flash for generating images and Gemma for processing text, audio, and video content.
Adding to its robust backing, Craig Donato, former Chief Business Officer at Roblox, has joined Voyage as both an investor and a board member. Other prominent investors include Album VC, Griffin Gaming Partners, Midjourney, and NFX.
While Voyage is currently free to play, Latitude will soon introduce a tiered subscription model, with plans priced at $15, $30, and $50. These premium subscriptions will unlock advanced AI features and remove existing limitations on the number of actions players can perform.
It is also important to note that although the platform is designed to be suitable for all ages, certain experiences may contain mature content, which Walton likens to material found on Steam. He emphasized that Voyage has implemented comprehensive safety measures and parental controls to assist users in filtering out inappropriate content.
