Google has reported a remarkable acceleration in patching security vulnerabilities within its Chrome browser, attributing this surge to the capabilities of its internal artificial intelligence tools. In the past month alone, the tech giant states it has addressed more security flaws than in the preceding two years combined.
The company confirmed on Thursday that a significant 1,072 security bugs were fixed across the last two versions of Chrome, both released in June. This figure notably surpasses the 1,036 bugs patched in the previous 23 versions distributed over the last two years, highlighting a dramatic shift in the pace of vulnerability resolution.
Since the emergence of large language models (LLMs), cybersecurity experts have consistently warned that AI-powered systems would uncover an exponentially increasing number of bugs. This, in turn, would necessitate defenders to leverage AI themselves to stay ahead of malicious actors.
This prediction is now manifesting as a tangible reality, substantiated by concrete data.
A chart released by Google, accompanying a white paper detailing its AI-driven efforts to identify and patch flaws more rapidly, visually illustrates this exponential growth. For context, Chrome’s 126th milestone was released in June 2024, while the more recent Chrome 149 and 150 versions were launched last month, with Google referring to each iteration as a "milestone."
Doug Turner, Chrome’s director of engineering, emphasized the profound impact of LLMs in a statement to TechCrunch, noting that they have “fundamentally shifted the economics of cybersecurity, transforming vulnerability discovery into an automated, industrial-scale operation.”
Turner further elaborated, stating, “By applying models like Gemini, we are preemptively fixing vulnerabilities, outpacing our adversaries and making Chrome safer with every update.”
This trend of AI-accelerated bug patching is not exclusive to Google.
Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a record 570 security flaws patched across its various product lines as part of its monthly scheduled updates, commonly known as “Patch Tuesday.” Microsoft similarly cited its own application of AI as the reason for this sudden increase in bug fixes.
Conversely, Apple does not appear to be experiencing the same exponential uptick. According to an independent analysis of bugs fixed in its products, Apple addressed 482 bugs in 2026, a number roughly consistent with or slightly surpassing the previous year’s figures, and also comparable to the number of bugs patched by Apple in 2015.
TechCrunch sought comment from Apple regarding this disparity but did not receive a response.
