OpenAI introduced Codex, an agentic coding tool aimed at software developers, earlier this week. Following this, the company has now unveiled GPT-5.3 Codex, a new model specifically engineered to significantly enhance Codex's capabilities.

OpenAI asserts that this new model elevates Codex beyond simply "writing and reviewing code" to an agent capable of performing "nearly anything developers and professionals do on a computer," thereby broadening access to software development and transforming workflows. Extensive performance benchmarking has led OpenAI to claim that GPT-5.3 Codex can generate "highly functional complex games and apps from scratch over the course of days."

Furthermore, OpenAI highlights that GPT-5.3 Codex boasts a 25 percent speed improvement over its predecessor, GPT-5.2. Notably, the company states this is its inaugural model that "was instrumental in creating itself," indicating that internal teams leveraged early iterations of the program for self-debugging and performance assessment.

This latest model introduction closely trails the recent launch of a competing agentic coding model by rival company, Anthropic. Interestingly, both OpenAI and Anthropic had initially scheduled a synchronized release for their respective agentic coding tools, set for 10 a.m. PST. However, Anthropic adjusted its launch time by moving it forward 15 minutes shortly before the agreed-upon slot, giving them a slight edge in the public announcement of these advanced models.
