Originating in 2023 as a research initiative at UC Berkeley designed to crowdsource rankings for AI models, Arena has successfully secured a $200 million Series B funding round, elevating its valuation to $3.1 billion. This announcement was made on Thursday by the platform that originally aimed to rank competing AI models.

This significant milestone follows the company's announcement in June that it had reached an annualized run-rate revenue of $100 million.

The round was spearheaded by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Salesforce Ventures, 01 Advisors, Dell Technologies Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, a16z, Felicis, and others. Previously, the company raised a $150 million Series A in January, securing a $1.7 billion post-money valuation at that time with $30 million in annualized revenue. Consequently, the company's valuation has nearly doubled within a span of approximately 10 months.

Arena operates a crowdsourced platform available for free to consumers. Users input prompts or request vibe-coded projects to rate which AI model performs better. The platform boasts tens of millions of monthly visitors.

In September of the previous year, the company launched its commercial offering, "AI Evaluations," a service providing model labs and enterprises with detailed performance analytics derived from community feedback. This strategic timing proved beneficial. This year, AI labs discovered that their models were manipulating benchmarking tests to score higher without genuine competence. Concurrently, enterprises sought assistance in determining which model best suited their internal needs rather than relying solely on standardized benchmarks.

"AI is advancing faster than our ability to evaluate it, and static benchmarks break down once models recognize they’re being tested," the company stated in its funding announcement. "The world needs a neutral third party to measure how safe and aligned AI actually is once it’s in the hands of real people. Arena is stepping into that role today," it added.

To address these needs, Arena has introduced a new category to its leaderboard: alignment. This section ranks models based on metrics such as unauthorized actions, false attribution, and "deceptive completion."

Currently, a selection of OpenAI’s models leads the preliminary alignment leaderboard, with Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable ranking sixth and ninth place, respectively.
