As the entertainment industry increasingly embraces generative AI, Adobe is strategically positioning its Firefly suite of creative tools to become the preferred solution for studios. The company has forged significant partnerships with leading directors, talent agencies, and art schools to develop AI models specifically engineered for the intricate demands of entertainment workflows.

Coinciding with this year's Sundance Film Festival, Adobe unveiled its initiative to collaborate with various studios, directors, and talent agencies. The goal is to create “private, IP-safe” Firefly Foundry generative AI “omni-models.” Adobe asserts that these Firefly Foundry models are designed to “accelerate creativity without eroding ownership or creative intent,” capable of generating diverse assets such as audio-aware videos and 3D/vector graphics that integrate seamlessly with existing Adobe products like Premiere.

A key differentiator for Firefly Foundry models, which are tailored for businesses rather than individual consumers, is their training methodology. Unlike many market alternatives that rely on vast, internet-scraped datasets, these models are uniquely configured for each client, trained exclusively on intellectual property to which the client holds the rights. While conceptually similar to the genAI startup Asteria, Adobe's decades of experience in developing creative tools grant it a distinct advantage in executing this ambitious vision.

Adobe emphasizes that this approach ensures Firefly Foundry models facilitate “responsible AI adoption across every stage of production,” spanning from initial pre-visualization to final edits. The company is leveraging its established reputation for creating some of the entertainment industry's most widely adopted creative software to encourage the adoption of this innovative technology.

In an interview with The Verge, Hannah Elsakr, Adobe's vice president of genAI new business ventures, explained that Firefly Foundry evolved from the company's prior engagements with large enterprises using less customizable Firefly models. These earlier iterations had limitations, such as an inability to generate assets beyond static images or to fully grasp the nuances of clients' intellectual property. This was primarily because Adobe's more basic gen AI models were trained solely on inputs for which Adobe had secured usage rights, which proved insufficient for the advanced asset creation desired by clients.

Elsakr quoted the demands of “global companies like The Home Depot and Disney,” stating, “They needed a creative world that understood multiple products, characters, and the physics of how those characters move — both for video and for 3D. That’s where Firefly Foundry comes in.”

To bolster Firefly Foundry's launch, Adobe has already initiated collaborations with prominent talent agencies, including Creative Artists Agency, United Talent Agency, and William Morris Endeavor. The company is also working with renowned directors like David Ayer (known for *Suicide Squad*) and Jaume Collet-Serra (of *Black Adam* fame). Furthermore, partnerships extend to production houses such as B5 Studios, Promise Advanced Imagination, and Cantina Creative, as well as academic institutions like Parsons School of Design and Whistling Woods International, to “develop research, educational resources, and curriculum focused on the role of AI in creative fields.”

Firefly Foundry presents a compelling generative AI solution that major corporations are likely to embrace, particularly as a means to mitigate potential IP infringement risks associated with general-purpose models. By focusing on integrating these tools early into the training of the next generation of creative professionals, Adobe appears to be strategically positioning itself for long-term success in the competitive AI landscape.
